shared ownership, what is it?

Shared ownership is a “part buy, part rent” scheme and can be an affordable 1st step on the property ladder. It is aimed at helping 1st time buyers but it is also open to anyone who can demonstrate that they fulfil the eligibility criteria.

The scheme allows you to purchase a share of the property and pay a discounted rent on the remaining share. Purchasers are only required to obtain a mortgage for the value of the share being purchased and usually the cost of the rent plus mortgage will be less than a full mortgage on the property.
